UCLA Library Digital Collections

The UCLA Library Digital Collections provide open access to rare and unique digitized primary sources from UCLA Library holdings and international partners. These materials support education, research, service, and creative expression. The platform offers high-resolution viewing with IIIF (International Image Interoperability Framework) functionality, enabling deep research, close inspection, annotation, and instructional use beyond static facsimiles.

Content includes photographs, sketches, posters, manuscripts, audio, video, ephemera, and more. Leading collections feature the Los Angeles Times Photographic Collection (tens of thousands of news photographs documenting Southern California growth, people, events, and broader U.S./world coverage from roughly 1918–1990, including glass, nitrate, and safety negatives); Albanian Photographic and Graphic Art materials; Carteles de Cine (Cuban film posters); Armenian manuscripts (such as the Gladzor Gospels); Bonnie Cashin fashion design sketches; and items from OpenUCLA and other open-access initiatives.

Roughly half the items correspond to physical materials viewable in person at UCLA Library Special Collections; others come from grant-funded, post-custodial partnerships. Key programs include the International Digital Ephemera Project (IDEP)—ephemera from Armenia, Cuba, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Israel/Palestine, South Africa, and elsewhere (newspapers, posters, postcards, protest videos)—and the Modern Endangered Archives Program (MEAP), which digitizes at-risk cultural heritage materials held overseas that can only be viewed online.

Additional related resources linked from UCLA Library pages include Picturing UCLA (visual history via University Archives photographs), the Center for Oral History Research (multi-session interviews on Los Angeles communities and history), the Strachwitz Frontera Collection of Mexican and Mexican American recordings, and Sinai Manuscripts / Palimpsests (Eastern Mediterranean history and literature, some requiring login).

The Digital Library Program works collaboratively across campus and with global partners to preserve cultural heritage materials while following ethical and inclusive descriptive practices. Collections emphasize curated quality over sheer volume and are continually expanded. Users can browse by subject, resource type, language, repository, and program (e.g., large holdings under IDEP and MEAP). Access is designed for students, faculty, researchers, and the public worldwide.
