Arsinoe Library Edition, 2026
The Arsinoe Library is excited to announce a new publication.
Robert Eno’s Daodejing is a free online teaching translation of the 81-chapter Chinese classic traditionally attributed to Laozi. Version 1.4, updated through 2025, presents the Chinese title and text alongside English translation, an extended introduction, and a glossary of key terms.
Eno frames the work as a classroom resource rather than a definitive scholarly edition. He cautions readers that the text emerged gradually, survives in both received and excavated versions, and resists any claim to a single, fully coherent philosophy. The introduction places the Daodejing within early Chinese intellectual history, distinguishing the later category “Daoism” from the looser network of classical writings that reacted against Confucian social and political ideals.
The text emphasizes themes of nonassertive action, simplicity, withdrawal from status competition, restraint in government, and alignment with the Dao—the underlying order of the world. Eno contrasts Daoist attraction to ambiguity, poetry, and paradox with Confucian commitments to ritual, social responsibility, and reform. His accompanying notes foreground the text’s historical uncertainty and the practical limits of interpreting aphoristic passages as a unified doctrine.
