Schmidt Sciences has awarded $11 million to up to 23 research teams worldwide to develop and apply artificial intelligence tools tailored to humanities fields including archaeology, history, literature, and related disciplines. The Humanities and AI Virtual Institute (HAVI) aims to overcome limitations of current AI models, which are trained primarily on contemporary data and modern languages, by creating specialized systems that can handle ancient languages, three-dimensional artifacts, and culture-specific materials. Projects will range from analyzing historical perspectives and film narratives to searching for buried archaeological sites and virtually reconstructing damaged manuscripts, spanning periods from ancient Egypt to Qing-era China and industrial England. The awards build on earlier grants and include a call for the next round of applications.
